Paris Saint-Germain handed Manchester City a reality check on Wednesday with securing a 4-2 Champions League victory at the Etihad Stadium following a pre-match show of defiance from the host club.
Playing their first home match since an independent panel found the club guilty of severe Premier League financial regulation breaches, City staged a lavish pre-match display featuring fireworks and high-profile guests including former manager Pep Guardiola in the stands.
However the European champions PSG quickly muted the home crowd with racing to a 3-0 lead in a dominant first half through goals from Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha.
City mounted a spirited second-half response after manager Enzo Maresca made tactical adjustments. Erling Haaland scored twice to spark hopes of a comeback but Maghnes Akliouche added a fourth for PSG to seal the win.
Despite the loss Man City showed resilience after the break amid the ongoing legal controversy surrounding their appeal against the financial ruling. PSG, meanwhile, demonstrated the form of a side capable of defending their European crown.
