Powerful explosions rocked the town of Al-Eis in the southern countryside of Syria's Aleppo province early Monday. The blasts triggered a continuous series of secondary explosions occurred at a military ammunition depot belonging to the Syrian Defense Ministry.
At least four people have been injured and evacuated from the site so far. However the local civil defense officials report that the ongoing secondary explosions are preventing emergency rescue teams from fully accessing the facility.
In a rapid response to the crisis Internal Security Directorate in Aleppo has been placed on high alert. Authorities have closed the strategic Aleppo-Damascus highway along with all surrounding roads leading to the affected area to ensure civilian safety.
Aleppo Governor Azzam Al-Gharib has issued an urgent public advisory and instructing residents to remain indoors and strictly avoid the vicinity of the blasts. He assured the public that all hospitals, ambulances and emergency teams are on standby and relevant authorities are actively monitoring the situation on the ground.
Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of Aleppo's civil defense operations, reiterated the warning and urging the public to maintain a safe distance while first responders work to manage the emergency. The exact cause of the initial explosion is currently under investigation by Syrian authorities.
