A Chattogram court has sentenced a 37-year-old man Md. Habibullah to life imprisonment for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Judge Afroza Jasmine Koli of the Chattogram Metropolitan Special Tribunal-8 delivered the verdict on Monday. After the charges were proven beyond a reasonable doubt based on the testimony of six witnesses, the court handed down the life sentence with rigorous imprisonment. Habibullah also received an additional seven-year rigorous prison term under a separate section of the law.
As the convict was absent during the pronouncement of the verdict, the court has issued an arrest warrant to secure his capture.
The conviction stems from a police operation conducted on June 19, 2021. Police raided the 'Unique Board Mill' (also known as Habib Cartoon Factory) in the West Mohra Industrial Area under Chandgaon Police Station. During the raid, Habibullah was arrested with two locally-made light guns (LGs) and three rounds of ammunition.
Following the arrest, a case was filed under the Arms Act. Police subsequently submitted a charge sheet and the trial officially commenced after charges were framed on November 23, 2021.
According to court records, the absconding convict is originally from Safa Bazar in Dhanisafa Union, under Mathbaria Police Station in Pirojpur district.
