The Supreme Court's full Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, began hearing arguments today (Tuesday, October 21) on the review petitions challenging the 2011 verdict that abolished the Caretaker Government System.
Advocate Dr. Sharif Bhuiyan is arguing for the petitioners, while Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman represents the state.
The court allowed the appeal on August 27 after initial hearings on the review. Review petitions were subsequently filed by prominent citizens, including Shujan Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Miah Golam Parwar.
The 2011 verdict had struck down the Constitution’s Thirteenth Amendment, which originally introduced the system in 1996. The current review was sought following a change of government on August 5, 2024.
