India's External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed in New Delhi that India is examining a letter sent by Bangladesh requesting the return of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.1 She fled to India following a student coup last year.
Jaiswal stated the letter is being examined as part of an "ongoing judicial and internal legal process." India reiterated its commitment to Bangladesh's best interests, including "peace, democracy, inclusion and stability," and confirmed it would continue to be "constructively connected with all stakeholders."
This is the third letter sent by Bangladesh seeking Sheikh Hasina's extradition. The latest request, sent after November 17th, cites the ruling by the International Crimes Tribunal which sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death for crimes against humanity related to killings during last year's protests.
The letter specifically requests her handover based on the extradition agreement signed between India and Bangladesh. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain confirmed that Bangladesh has not yet received a response to the latest Note Verbal (diplomatic letter) sent through their mission, adding they do not expect an answer immediately.
