BNP is not merely a political party but a symbol of the rights, democracy, independence, sovereignty and economic freedom of the people of Bangladesh, said Syed Mohammad Faisal, MP for Habiganj-4 (Madhabpur-Chunarughat).

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organised by the Madhabpur Upazila and Municipal BNP units on Tuesday (September 1) to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Faisal said BNP was founded by former president Ziaur Rahman on September 1, 1978. According to him, Bangladeshi nationalism, multiparty democracy, religious freedom, social justice and public welfare are among the party’s core principles.

He paid tribute to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and recalled the prolonged democratic movement led by BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Faisal said BNP would work to ensure people’s voting rights, the rule of law and improvements in living standards.

Calling for unity among party leaders and activists, he said a happy, prosperous and discrimination-free Bangladesh would be built under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Other speakers at the meeting included district BNP Vice President Syed Mohammad Shahjahan, Municipal BNP President Golap Khan, General Secretary Alauddin Al Rony, Upazila BNP Vice President and Chairman Parvez Hossain Chowdhury, Vice President Oli Ullah, Organising Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Sohag, former mayor Habibur Rahman Manik, former vice-chairman Abdul Aziz, Shamsul Islam Mamun, Masukur Rahman and Alamgir Kabir, among others.

A large number of BNP leaders and activists from the upazila’s 11 unions attended the programme, arriving in colourful processions along with leaders and activists of the party’s affiliated and associate organisations.
