The government has nationally honoured 101 distinguished teachers on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day.
The honours were presented at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Monday, October 5. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the event as the chief guest and handed the awards to the teachers.
Each recipient received Tk 200,000 and a crest as part of the national recognition.
According to the information provided, a national steering committee finalised 95 teachers, while six others were selected by the prime minister. However, the names of recipients may subsequently be removed from the list if adverse comments or information are found against any of the honoured teachers.
The 2026 World Teachers’ Day is being observed under the theme “Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status, Shaping Our Futures.” Bangladesh is observing the day alongside countries around the world.
The decision to observe October 5 as World Teachers’ Day was taken at UNESCO’s 26th General Conference in Paris in 1993, and the day was first observed in 1994.
This year marks the first time Bangladesh has expanded its national recognition to teachers across different levels from primary to higher education. Earlier, national recognition was given to 12 teachers; the 2026 arrangements expanded the recognition to 100 teachers, alongside the additional six selected under the prime minister’s special consideration.
The government’s World Teachers’ Day programme is part of broader efforts to recognise teachers’ contributions and strengthen the status of the teaching profession in Bangladesh.
