A police constable who was critically injured after being hit by a bus while chasing three youths suspected of mugging in Chattogram city has died while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Constable Al Amin Sardar, 25, died early Monday, October 5, while receiving treatment in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The accident occurred around 6:30am on Sunday, October 4, while Al Amin was on duty at the Ispahani checkpoint area near Wasa intersection.
Al Amin was working in the Order Management Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) and was attached to Kotwali Police Station. He joined Bangladesh Police in 2022.
His home district was Madaripur. He was married and had one child.
According to police, Al Amin and several other officers were on duty at the Wasa intersection checkpoint on Sunday morning when they signalled three youths who were walking suspiciously to stop.
When one of the youths attempted to flee, checkpoint in-charge ASI Hiron Mia chased him. Al Amin also followed on a motorcycle through another route in an attempt to intercept the youth.
At one point, as Al Amin approached the western gate of a mosque, a bus belonging to Leaders School and College came at high speed and struck him from behind.
He sustained critical injuries in the collision. Police personnel at the checkpoint, with help from local residents, subsequently detained the bus driver and a staff member.
Al Amin was rescued and taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors admitted him to the ICU. He died there early Monday while undergoing treatment.
Police arrested bus driver Mosharraf, 38, and staff member Joy Das, 30, in connection with the incident. The bus was also seized.
A case has been filed against them under the Road Transport Act.
