Auto-rickshaw drivers blocked roads at several points in the capital on Monday, October 5, protesting the disconnection of electricity connections, causing severe traffic congestion and hardship for commuters.
The drivers had announced a halt to auto-rickshaw services from Monday after campaigning in different parts of Dhaka with loudspeakers on Sunday to inform people about the strike.
With a significant number of auto-rickshaws off the roads, pressure on other forms of public transport increased, disrupting the daily commute of office-goers, students and other passengers.
The situation was particularly difficult in areas where residents rely heavily on auto-rickshaws for transportation. Road blockades by the drivers also disrupted traffic movement in several locations, with congestion reported in some areas.
The drivers said the disconnection of electricity connections has disrupted their livelihoods and affected the operation of their vehicles. They announced that they would continue their movement until the issue is resolved.
Authorities are monitoring the situation as the strike and road blockades continue to affect traffic across different parts of the capital.
