Former Chattogram WASA Driver, Wife Sentenced to 3 Years in Graft Case

A Chattogram court has sentenced former Chattogram WASA driver Md Tajul Islam and his wife Khairunnesa Begum to three years’ rigorous imprisonment each in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income.

Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Md Mizanur Rahman delivered the verdict on Monday, October 5.

According to ACC Public Prosecutor Mokarram Hossain, the court sentenced Tajul Islam to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk 1,569,193, equivalent to 50% of the Tk 3,138,386 in assets identified in the case. In default of payment, he will serve an additional six months in rigorous imprisonment.

The court also sentenced his wife Khairunnesa Begum to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a Tk 100,000 fine. The case record also states that a fine of Tk 1,569,193 was imposed, with an additional six months’ rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

The accused were present in court when the verdict was announced. The court ordered that they be sent to jail.

According to the case documents, Tajul Islam and his wife allegedly acted in collusion to acquire money beyond their known sources of income and used it to purchase land and construct a building in Khairunnesa Begum’s name.

The case also alleged that Khairunnesa opened an income tax file in her own name to give legitimacy to her husband’s allegedly illegally earned money and declared the assets and sources of income there.

In addition, she was accused of concealing information about assets worth Tk 1,297,079 in the wealth statement submitted to the ACC.

The case was filed under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code.

Following the investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet to the court. Charges were framed against the accused on July 1, 2025, at the Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Court, after which the trial began. The court reached its verdict after considering testimony from nine witnesses.
