The Cabinet has congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh delegation for the country’s participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and their involvement in various high-level meetings.
The congratulatory proposal was approved at a Cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday, Sept 28.
The Cabinet Division later confirmed the matter in a press release.
According to the release, Bangladesh’s participation in the 81st UNGA under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership was described as a historic event of special significance for the country. Tarique Rahman addressed the 81st UNGA on Sept 24.
The Cabinet Division noted that his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, had addressed the 11th Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Aug 26, 1980, while his mother, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, addressed the 48th session of the General Assembly on Oct 1, 1993.
The Cabinet Division said that three members of the same family representing their country at the UN General Assembly was a unique event in world history.
During his four-day visit, the prime minister took part in 32 international programmes and meetings, according to the press release. In addition to addressing the 81st UNGA, he spoke at seven high-level meetings, held bilateral meetings with 11 countries and met senior officials of 10 international organisations, including the United Nations.
The Cabinet Division said Bangladesh’s participation in the General Assembly under Tarique Rahman’s leadership presented the government’s commitments and expectations on the global stage and contributed to expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Against this backdrop, the Cabinet extended its sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh delegation.
