Bangladesh were eliminated from the FIFA ASEAN Cup following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Singapore at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Monday.
The loss marks Bangladesh’s second consecutive group-stage defeat following a 3-0 loss to Malaysia in their opening match. Javier Cabrera’s men remain at the bottom of Group A with zero points from two games.
Bangladesh started brightly with Rakib Hossain and Hamza Choudhury creating early pressure on Singapore’s defense. However, the team lacked clinical finishing in the final third and failed to record a single shot on target in the first half despite maintaining significant possession.
Singapore capitalized on their chances in the 36th minute when midfielder Harhys Stewart headed home from a left-wing cross by Nur Adam Abdullah beating Bangladesh goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon. Minutes later Singapore nearly doubled their advantage but a right-footed strike rattled off the crossbar.
Bangladesh pushed forward aggressively in the second half searching for an equalizer but Singapore’s defense held firm until the final whistle.
While Singapore kept their knockout qualification hopes alive with three points, Bangladesh will play their final group fixture against hosts Indonesia for pride.
