Five members of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have been suspended following the escape of an alleged top drug dealer while being transported from a Dhaka court to Kashimpur Jail.
The escapee, identified as Raja alias "Pichchi Raja" is a key drug suspect from the capital’s Mohammadpur area and faces explosive substances charges.
The incident occurred on Sunday (27 September) as 30 prisoners were being brought back to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur following court proceedings at the Dhaka Metropolitan Court.
According to GMP Acting Commissioner Md Taherul Huq Chouhan, the accused repeatedly requested to use a restroom while in transit. When the prison van reached the Baimail area in Gazipur, an accompanying sub-inspector escorted Raja to a nearby toilet, where the suspect managed to give police the slip and flee.
GMP authorities have formed a three-member investigation committee to probe the security breach and determine how the prisoner managed to outsmart police personnel. Operations are underway to apprehend the fugitive.
