Center-right coalition candidate Simone Venturini has been elected as the new mayor of Venice, defying prior exit polls that had predicted a progressive breakthrough. Venturini secured an outright victory in the first round of the municipal elections by capturing over 51% of the vote.
At 38 years old, Venturini becomes the youngest mayor in the history of the canal city. Running his campaign under a prominent yellow theme, Venturini previously held significant administrative roles managing Venice’s tourism portfolio and social cohesion programs.
In his victory address, the mayor-elect thanked citizens for choosing a path of renewal. "Today's victory is not just mine; it belongs to every resident, every waterway, and every tradition of Venice. To all who voted for change, my deepest gratitude," Venturini said.
The historic city faces pressing systemic challenges, including severe over-tourism, environmental degradation, and acute housing shortages for local residents. Venturini has pledged to implement long-term, eco-friendly policies to safeguard Venice's lagoon and canals, prioritize municipal job creation for local youths, and balance the tourism economy with the everyday living standards of native residents.
Official results confirmed that Venturini defeated his primary challenger, Andrea Martella of the center-left coalition, who secured nearly 39% of the vote. Independent candidate Michele Boldrin representing 'ORA! Venezia' finished a distant third with 3.39%, while minor parties and independent candidates collectively accounted for 2.6%. Total voter turnout stood at approximately 60%.
Political analysts observe that despite his decisive first-round victory, Venturini will face a robust opposition bloc within the city council, testing his administration's ability to enforce stricter day-tripper access fees and implement climate-resilience measures.
