Andy Burnham is poised to become Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade, succeeding Keir Starmer. The 56-year-old takes office just two years after Labour’s landslide 2024 election victory, following Starmer’s resignation late last month amid political scandals and policy missteps.

Known as the "King of the North" for his successful tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham aims to restore public trust. After formally meeting King Charles III, he will outline his priorities outside 10 Downing Street. His immediate focus will be tackling the severe cost-of-living crisis and decentralizing power to regional communities. As his first major policy decision, Burnham scrapped Starmer’s £1.8 billion digital ID scheme to redirect funds toward easing living costs for ordinary people.

Despite his swift rise to leadership, Burnham faces massive challenges. He must navigate a sluggish economy, high public debt, and the rising popularity of Nigel Farage's anti-immigration Reform UK party. Additionally, unpredictable global events—such as volatile energy prices driven by the US-Iran war and a turbulent US administration under Donald Trump—pose significant external threats.

Deputy Labour Leader Lucy Powell emphasized that Burnham’s mayoral experience equips him to implement "bigger, bolder measures" and reform an over-centralized political system. However, with a general election expected in 2029, Burnham has a brief three-year window to deliver results. Calling this moment Labour's "last chance," Burnham insists he has a plan to prioritize the economic security and future opportunities of everyday citizens over vested interests.
