British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to resign, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The report cited a cabinet source who claimed that Starmer is willing to step down, but wants to leave “on his own terms.” According to the source, he understands that the current political turmoil cannot continue for long. However, he wants to resign with dignity and announce his own timeline for departure.
The UK Labour government is facing growing pressure amid rising public dissatisfaction. Controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson and allegations linked to his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have intensified criticism of the government.
Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local elections has also increased calls for Starmer’s resignation.
The pressure grew further after senior Labour figure Wes Streeting announced plans to challenge Starmer for the party leadership. Speaking on Saturday, Streeting called for a clear timetable for Starmer’s departure and confirmed his intention to run for prime minister.
Starmer’s public approval ratings have also declined sharply. According to a recent survey by YouGov, around 69 percent of British voters expressed dissatisfaction with the Labour leader.
The survey reportedly described Starmer as one of the most unpopular prime ministers in recent UK political history. Some political observers have compared his situation to former Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose tenure lasted only 49 days.
