Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is facing intense pressure to resign or be fired following a controversial joke about First Lady Melania Trump, made just days before an assassination attempt on the President.
The Controversy
During a sketch last Thursday, Kimmel referred to Melania Trump as an "expectant widow," a comment he later defended as a "light roast" regarding the 23-year age gap between the First Lady and President Donald Trump.
The situation turned grave on Saturday when 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen opened fire near a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. While the President and First Lady were evacuated unharmed, the timing of Kimmel's joke has sparked a national outcry.
White House and FCC Response
Melania Trump condemned the remarks on X (formerly Twitter), calling them "hateful and violent rhetoric" that deepens political division. President Trump joined the call for action, demanding that ABC and its parent company, Disney, fire the comedian immediately.
In a significant escalation, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reportedly conducting an early review of Disney’s broadcast licenses. This follows a formal request for an investigation by the National Religious Broadcasters, who argue the joke normalized political violence.
Kimmel and Supporters Defend "Satire"
Returning to his show, Kimmel rejected claims that his words were a call to violence. "It was a joke about the fact that he's almost 80," Kimmel said, noting his long-standing advocacy against gun violence.
Actor George Clooney also defended the host, suggesting that political "shots fired" is common terminology in comedy and press relations, and should not be taken literally.
ABC Stands Firm
Despite the regulatory pressure and social media backlash, insiders at ABC report that the network is "sticking by" Kimmel. For now, the show continues to tape as scheduled. This is not the first time Kimmel has faced suspension; he was briefly taken off the air last September following controversial comments regarding the death of a conservative influencer.
The suspect in Saturday’s shooting, Cole Tomas Allen, appeared in court Monday charged with attempting to assassinate the President.
