Police have arrested Rimon Barua, alias Teju Barua, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of a mother and her teenage daughter in Chittagong’s Anwara upazila.
District police apprehended the suspect in the Patiya area on Sunday night. He had been absconding since the killings took place.
The victims, 40-year-old Eni Barua and her 16-year-old daughter Priyanti Barua, were killed in their home in the Chenamati Barua Para area of Parikoda Union on Saturday night. Eni’s five-year-old son, Pias Barua, was severely injured during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
According to police and local sources, the head of the family, Sujon Barua, was at work when the attackers broke into the house. The assailants used sharp weapons, killing the mother and daughter on the spot before injuring the young boy.
Sujon Barua alleges that he had an ongoing financial dispute with the accused. Investigators are currently treating this financial conflict as a primary motive for the attack.
Additional Superintendent of Police (DB and Industrial Area) Russell confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is undergoing interrogation. Police are working to extract further details about the incident and recover the murder weapons.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the scene and sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies. The investigation remains ongoing.
