


Police have arrested two men for stealing Tk 220,000 from the office room of a Jama Masjid in the Sadarghat area of Chittagong.
The suspects, identified as Arif (36) and Md. Sumon (36), were apprehended after police reviewed the mosque's CCTV footage. Authorities have recovered Tk 186,500 of the stolen funds so far.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Friday (June 19). Imam Tamjid Rahman left Tk 220,000 in the mosque's office room before going to lead prayers. Upon returning, he discovered the money was missing. After checking the mosque's CCTV system and confirming the theft, the Imam filed a written complaint with the Sadarghat Police Station at around 9:30 PM.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police analyzed the video footage and identified Arif as a primary suspect. He was arrested during a raid at a residence near the Sona Shah Mazar in the Halishahar Eidgah Barfkol area. Officers recovered Tk 126,500 from his possession.
Based on information provided during Arif's interrogation, police then arrested Sumon and recovered an additional Tk 60,000.
Sadarghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Sharif confirmed the timeline of the arrests, stating that formal legal action is currently underway against both suspects.
