A joint force of the army and police arrested three members of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), including a toll collector, following a gunfight in Ramgarh upazila on Saturday. One of the suspects was shot and injured during the encounter.
An AK-22 rifle, a magazine, and five rounds of live ammunition were recovered during the drive.
The arrestees were identified as Ronel Chakma, 28, a designated UPDF collector, and organization members Sweethoai Marma, 35, and Raju Marma alias Saching, 19.
Ramgarh Circle Additional Superintendent of Police, Obain, said the operation was launched around 12:00 PM in the Budangchhara area of Patachhara Union, based on a tip-off. The joint team comprised troops from the Sindhukchhari Army Zone and personnel from Ramgarh Police Station.
"As law enforcers approached, the terrorists opened fire, triggering a gunfight. The group eventually retreated under retaliatory fire," the police official said.
During a search of the area, the joint force found Sweethoai Marma with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. The other two were apprehended nearby, and the AK-22 rifle was seized from Ronel.
Sweethoai was rushed to Ramgarh Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for advanced treatment.
Md. Nazir Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramgarh Police Station, confirmed that a case against the three suspects is currently being filed.
