Two suspected robbers were killed in a mob beating early Friday in Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha District, police said.

The incident occurred around 5:00am in Khodda Mojahidpur village of Idilpur Union.

The deceased were identified as Lebu Mia, also known as Bhandal, 25, of Satarpara village in Palashbari Upazila, and Mainul Islam, 50, of Mostapur village. Their identities were confirmed by police.

According to police and local sources, three men allegedly robbed a woman at knifepoint of gold ornaments, cash and other belongings near Madarhat Bridge in Idilpur Union. Hearing the woman’s screams, local residents chased the suspects as they tried to flee on a motorcycle.

When the suspects reached Khodda Mojahidpur village, villagers attempted to block their escape. The motorcycle reportedly lost control and fell into a nearby pond. One suspect managed to flee, while the other two were caught and beaten by locals. They died at the scene.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Alim of Sadullapur Police Station said the bodies were recovered and sent to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A motorcycle was also seized, and preparations for filing a case are under way.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Sharif Al Rajib said legal action would follow after verification of identities and completion of the investigation.

Police have reiterated that taking the law into one’s own hands is illegal and urged the public to hand suspects over to authorities.
