Police are investigating the suspicious death of a young man whose body was found hanging from a ceiling hook with his hands tied behind his back inside a locked room in Mirzaganj upazila on Thursday.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through Daser Danga village in the Amragachhia union, as investigators try to establish whether the death was a homicide staged to look like a suicide.
The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Imran Hossain Sabuj, son of Harun Hawlader. Sabuj had recently returned to Bangladesh after spending nearly five years working abroad.
According to family members, Sabuj had returned home on Thursday morning after helping slaughter a cow for Eid-ul-Azha sacrifices. He subsequently entered his bedroom and locked the door from the inside.
By late afternoon, his father and uncle became alarmed when Sabuj failed to respond to repeated knocks, the doorbell, and consecutive phone calls. Peering through a window, they spotted his body hanging from an iron hook on the ceiling. There was no ceiling fan installed in the room.
The family broke open the door to rescue him, but Sabuj was already dead.
The case took a dramatic turn when relatives and police noticed the position of the body.
"My nephew was a polite boy and we were not aware of him having any enemies," Sabuj's uncle stated. "But his death does not seem natural. When he was found hanging, his hands were firmly tied behind his back."
"The cause of death is yet to be confirmed. However, the fact that the deceased's hands were tied behind his back with a rope makes the entire incident highly suspicious. We are looking into all possibilities."— Nurul Islam, Inspector (Investigation), Mirzaganj Police Station.
Mirzaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Salam stated that the body has been sent to the district morgue for a post-mortem examination. "The exact cause of death will be clear once we receive the autopsy report. We are checking for any external links, personal feuds, or alternative motives surrounding his sudden death," the OC added.
This report is based on on-scene statements from the family of the deceased and official briefings provided by Officer-in-Charge Abdus Salam and Inspector Nurul Islam of the Mirzaganj Police Station, Patuakhali.
