The Shantiganj Upazila administration and local Fisheries Department seized and destroyed about 100 meters of illegal ring nets during a joint drive in Sunamganj’s wetland region on Wednesday.
The operation took place in Talerband Haor under Shimulbak Union, conducted with assistance from Shantiganj Police. Officials searched multiple locations across the wetland, recovering ring nets valued at approximately Tk.50,000. The seized gear was immediately taken to high ground and destroyed by fire.
Key officials present during the drive included Shantiganj Upazila Fisheries Officer Kamrul Hasan, Patharia Union Land Assistant Officer Mostafa Kamal and Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukhleshur Rahman.
Fisheries authorities warned that harmful ring nets severely disrupt native fish breeding and destroy fragile aquatic ecosystems in the haors. Officials confirmed that regular anti-poaching drives will continue across the district to protect indigenous fish species and preserve wetland biodiversity.
