A 30-year-old female credit officer working for BRAC was killed in a road accident in Daganbhuiyan, Feni on Thursday morning.
The deceased Zobaida Akter the daughter of Md. Babul Miah from Sonagazi was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by her colleague Moniruzzaman. Both were travelling on field duty for BRAC’s ‘Progoti’ microfinance program when the incident occurred around 11:00 AM on the Feni-Noakhali regional highway near Ataturk School Market.
According to police and local eyewitnesses, the motorcycle struck the middle section of a Noakhali-bound covered van from behind. The impact caused the motorcycle to lose balance, throwing Zobaida onto the road where she fell under the rear wheels of the van.
Locals rushed Zobaida to the Daganbhuiyan Upazila Health Complex where attending doctors declared her dead. Moniruzzaman received medical treatment for his injuries. Following the accident, agitated locals intercepted the covered van and beat the driver before police arrived.
Daganbhuiyan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Foyzul Azim Noman confirmed the accident also stating that police seized both vehicles and sent Zobaida’s body to the Feni General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The accident has highlighted severe traffic mismanagement in Daganbhuiyan municipal town. Local traders pointed out that illegal parking and chaotic congestion created by auto-rickshaws at the junction frequently cause commuters to lose control, calling on authorities to take immediate traffic control measures. Zobaida leaves behind her husband and a five-year-old son.
