The Coast Guard has seized 600 sacks of urea fertiliser worth approximately Tk21 lakh in Sitakunda, Chattogram, while it was allegedly being prepared for smuggling to Myanmar.
Two people were also detained along with two trucks allegedly used in the smuggling operation.
According to the Coast Guard, Station Bhatiari conducted a raid near Bashbaria Ghat in Sitakunda at around 12:30am on Thursday (September 24) following a tip-off.
During the operation, the Coast Guard seized 30,000kg, or 600 sacks, of urea fertiliser while it was allegedly being transferred from trucks to a cargo boat for illegal shipment to Myanmar.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said two people were detained and two trucks used to transport the fertiliser were seized during the operation.
He said legal proceedings concerning the seized fertiliser, trucks and detained individuals were underway.
Earlier, on September 10, the Coast Guard had seized 700 sacks of urea fertiliser from three trucks in the same Bashbaria Ghat area while it was allegedly being smuggled to Myanmar.
That shipment contained 35,000kg of fertiliser, with an estimated value of Tk24.5 lakh. Two people were detained along with the three trucks at the time.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said Coast Guard operations to prevent smuggling would continue in the future.
