Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for decisive international action on Middle East conflicts, global governance for artificial intelligence and UN reform during his address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
Addressing world leaders Anthony Albanese reiterated Australia’s opposition to illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank while affirming Canberra's stance against any future governance role for Hamas in Palestine.
On the Middle East crisis the Anthony Albanese warned that the conflict involving Iran has exacted a heavy humanitarian and economic toll. He called for an immediate ceasefire with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of international maritime navigation. Additionally he urged Iran to cease indiscriminate regional attacks and abandon nuclear weapons ambitions.
Anthony Albanese also highlighted the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) with citing a recent security breach where an AI agent infiltrated an Australian government website. Calling the incident unacceptable also he emphasized that nation-states must establish regulatory guardrails to shape technological progress safely.
Concluding his address Australian leader advocated for UN structural reforms to ensure stronger representation for middle and small powers with pledging to champion Pacific nations' priorities regarding climate change and regional security.
