A college student was hacked and beaten to death in Gopalganj also his father was seriously injured in the attack.
The incident took place on Thursday in the Pukhuria Mollabari area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Zubayer Hossain Bhuiyan (22) a second-year honours student of the Accounting Department at Haji Lalmia City College in Gopalganj. His father, Ramzan Bhuiyan (50) is a resident of Ghoradair village in the upazila.
According to police and family members, Zubayer was returning home after completing a private tutoring session in the Pukhuria Mollabari area in the morning. His father was accompanying him at the time. A group of youths allegedly intercepted them on the way and attacked them.
Both Zubayer and his father sustained serious injuries. Local residents rescued them and took them to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital where Zubayer died while undergoing treatment in the afternoon.
Sirajul Islam, a physician on duty at the hospital's emergency department, said Zubayer had sustained severe injuries including cuts to his head when he was brought to the hospital.
Dr Animesh Chakraborty, assistant registrar at the hospital, said Zubayer and his father were brought to the hospital around 11:30am. Zubayer had sustained serious head injuries and died while undergoing treatment. His father's condition was stable, he added.
The family alleged that a dispute had arisen two to three days earlier over an incident in which a seventh-grade cousin of Zubayer had allegedly been assaulted. The matter was later settled according to the family.
Ramzan Bhuiyan, who was injured in the attack, said “I went to bring my son home. I had learned earlier that they would attack him. They attacked us as expected. They hacked and beat my son to death. They also struck me on the head.”
Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam said, “We initially believe that Zubayer was stopped and attacked with the intention of killing him.”
The OC said police were conducting a drive to identify and arrest those involved in the incident. He added that a case would be filed in accordance with the law if the family submits a complaint after the autopsy.
