Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee inaugurated riverbank protection works costing Tk.60 crore on Friday at Piyarapur Shahid Mozaffarul Monir High School grounds in Bhabaniganj Union, Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
Organized by the Bangladesh Water Development Board under the Bangladesh Sustainable Development Project, the initiative utilizes geo-cement packages across 27 vulnerable spots along a 10-kilometer stretch to curb severe erosion and protect local settlements, farmland and infrastructure.
Addressing the event, Minister Anee disclosed that the government plans to undertake a Tk.300-crore project to construct a permanent embankment along the Rahmatkhali River.
During his speech minister also levelled political allegations, claiming that the opposition party and "fascist forces" were involved in anti-government activities and incidents related to women in society.
Water Development Board officials and local representatives attended the ceremony. Residents expressed optimism that timely execution of the protection works will safeguard lives and property along the erosion-prone riverbanks.
