Eight more people have died of dengue fever across Bangladesh, pushing the national death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 209 this year according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Data released Thursday from the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the DGHS showed that 782 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the same reporting period.
Health authorities reported that eight fatalities occurred over the past two weeks, reflecting a continuous surge in severe cases. Hospitals in Dhaka and surrounding districts continue to handle a high volume of admissions with medical professionals urging citizens to seek immediate medical attention upon showing symptoms such as high fever, joint pain and severe headaches.
Public health experts have repeatedly advised residents to eliminate standing water around homes and workplaces to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vector for the dengue virus. Municipal authorities are being urged to step up vector control operations including fogging and larvicide spraying, to contain the spread.
