A Dhaka court has ordered a 17-year-old boy sent to the Tongi Juvenile Development Centre following a fatal car accident on a Baridhara footpath that killed 24-year-old construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when an out-of-control sedan mounted the sidewalk in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone, fatally striking Mehedi while he was resting. Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage showed the teenager, identified as Azan Ali Sharif, exiting the vehicle from the driver's side. Locals detained him at the scene and handed him over to the police.
Initial public outcry erupted after police released the boy into his family's custody that night, while the victim's brother filed a case naming the family's official driver, Akash Mark, instead of the teenager. Following widespread criticism online, police arrested the 17-year-old student on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Juvenile Court-8 ordered the boy sent to the Tongi center. During the hearing, defense lawyer Alamgir Hossain claimed a Tk.900,000 compromise had been reached with the victim's family submitted a no-objection statement regarding bail.
However, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam stated he was unaware of any financial settlement and confirmed that the police investigation into the death will proceed regardless of private compromises.
