Police recovered the bodies of four members of a family, including a former teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, from a locked house in the Machuapara area of Rangpur city on Saturday night.
Police broke open the lock and entered the two-story house after local residents reported a foul smell coming from inside.
The deceased were identified as former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter, Parthi Chakraborty, 24; and their son, Piyam Chakraborty, 12.
After retiring from teaching, Ganapati ran a homeopathic practice from his residence. His daughter was a master’s student at Carmichael College, while his son was a fifth-grade student at Rangpur Zilla School.
According to police, Ganapati’s body was found on the roof of the house. His wife and daughter were found on the staircase, while his son’s body was found in a room.
Members of the Criminal Investigation Department’s crime scene unit, Rangpur Metropolitan Police and Detective Branch were working at the scene. The bodies were being prepared for autopsies as the investigation continued.
Rangpur CID Superintendent of Police (acting) Sumit Chowdhury told reporters that the deaths appeared to have occurred two to three days earlier, based on the condition of the scene.
He said preliminary evidence suggested the incident could be linked to a robbery. The victims may have been strangled with a towel or piece of cloth, he said.
Police also found that the house’s electricity connection had been disconnected and that furniture and other places where jewelry was reportedly kept had been broken open.
Chowdhury said investigators would determine the exact circumstances and motive after a detailed investigation.
