Chattogram Medical College Hospital was without electricity for about two and a half hours on Saturday, disrupting services for patients and their attendants.
The power outage lasted from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. During the disruption, patients faced difficulties obtaining tickets at the emergency department and undergoing diagnostic tests.
Patients at the hospital’s Radiology and Imaging Department had to wait for extended periods because diagnostic equipment could not operate normally.
Kazi Md. Alam, head of the Radiology and Imaging Department, said X-rays could not be performed during the outage. The ultrasound machines also require air conditioning to operate, making them difficult to use without electricity.
Nurul Amin, a patient who had traveled from Rangunia for an X-ray, said he had to wait for several hours because the service was unavailable.
Shahidul Islam, executive engineer of the Power Development Board’s sales and distribution division, said the outage had been announced in advance because cabling and maintenance work was scheduled under a feeder serving the Stadium area.
He said power was restored after the hospital director contacted the authorities and raised concerns about the impact on patients.
Chattogram Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md. Taslim Uddin said the hospital continued essential medical services using its backup generators.
He said the operating theaters, emergency department, surgery wards, ICU, CCU and HDU remained operational, and no major disruption to critical care was reported.
