FC Barcelona celebrated their long-awaited return to the rebuilt Camp Nou—delayed by a year due to construction setbacks with a resounding 4-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, catapulting Hansi Flick's side level on points with Real Madrid atop La Liga.
Barcelona's comfortable win was spearheaded by a brace from Ferran Torres, with the other goals coming from veteran striker Robert Lewandowski (wearing the captain's armband) and Fermín López.
Lewandowski opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a powerful low strike after Eric Garcia won the ball high up the pitch. This was Lewandowski's eighth league goal despite an injury-hit season.
Ferran Torres doubled the lead just before half-time, assisted by Lamine Yamal. Fermín López struck early in the second half following another high press by Eric Garcia. Torres secured his brace and the fourth goal late on, again assisted by a superb pass from Yamal.
Athletic Bilbao's afternoon worsened when Oihan Sancet was sent off after a VAR review for hacking down López in frustration. Barcelona's goalkeeper Joan Garcia returned from a nine-game injury absence to help the team keep their first clean sheet since September.
A little over 45,000 fans filled the three open stands, witnessing fireworks and celebrating the goals. Despite exorbitant ticket prices, the match was virtually sold out. Fans also sang Lionel Messi's name in the 10th minute and whistled former target Nico Williams throughout the match.
