Authorities at Chattogram Government City College have formed a five-member investigation committee following a violent clash between activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir on Tuesday.
The principal of the college Abu Saleh Mohammad Naeem Uddin, announced that the committee has been given seven days to submit its findings. Following a meeting with faculty on Wednesday, the college administration also decided to ban outsiders from entering the campus and requested continued police support to maintain order.
While classes were suspended on Wednesday a heavy police presence remained on the City College campus. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali stated that surveillance has been intensified across all major educational institutions in the city to prevent further violence.
The clash on Tuesday was reportedly triggered by a dispute over campus graffiti. Witnesses said a "Student Politics-Free Campus" slogan was defaced leading to social media tension and a physical confrontation near New Market intersection. Several people were injured as the two groups engaged in chases and stone-throwing causing shops in the area to shut down in panic.
CMP Commissioner Ali confirmed that police are reviewing video footage to identify those who used domestic weapons during the brawl. "We will take strict legal action against anyone involved in the attack and regardless of their political affiliation" he told reporters.
