The personal assistant (PS) to Narail-2 Member of Parliament Ataur Rahman Bacchu has been dismissed following controversy over a parliamentary discretionary grant list that included the lawmaker's daughter twice. The decision was announced Sunday in an official notice signed by the MP on Bangladesh National Parliament letterhead.
According to the notice, Abu Saleh Mohammad Gofran was removed from his position for "negligence in the discharge of his duties." The dismissal took effect immediately on June 28.
The action comes after a list of beneficiaries approved under the Parliament Secretariat's discretionary fund circulated on social media, prompting criticism because the MP's daughter's name appeared twice.
Amid the backlash, Ataur Rahman Bacchu, who also serves as the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami's Narail district unit, said on Saturday that he had delegated responsibility for submitting the beneficiary list to his personal assistant within the required deadline.
The MP alleged that, without his knowledge, several names of individuals known to the assistant were added to the list. He blamed his personal assistant for the errors and irregularities that led to the controversy.
The Parliament Secretariat has not publicly commented on whether the grant list will be reviewed or revised following the incident.
