Father of student's classmate arrested in Ramgarh over attempted rape case.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl in the Tholipara area of Patachhara Union, Ramgarh Upazila, Khagrachhari District, Bangladesh.

Omar Ali, whose daughter is a classmate of the victim at a local madrasa, was taken into custody Saturday evening, roughly 30 hours after the alleged attack.

On Friday, June 27, the seventh-grade student was cooking alone at her maternal grandfather's home while her grandmother fished nearby and other relatives had gone out. According to Moin, the victim's relative and brother of July martyr Abdul Majid, Omar Ali entered the kitchen after Friday prayers, made inappropriate advances toward the girl, and when she refused, forcibly grabbed her and tore her clothing. The victim screamed; Ali fled.

Though the incident occurred Friday afternoon, the family did not file a complaint until near midnight. Ramgarh Police Station OC Md. Nazir Alam told reporters that Ali's associates spent most of Friday attempting to pressure the victim's family into a private settlement. When those efforts failed, the family went to police. Ali was arrested Saturday evening. The case is under investigation.
