Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan emphasized that news based on assumptions must not be published without rigorous fact-checking. Speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting at the Pabna Press Club on Friday night, the Minister highlighted the risks of misinformation on digital platforms.
"Information is frequently presented on social media and YouTube in ways that create public confusion," the Minister stated. "To ensure accuracy, all news must be verified before publication. Relying on assumptions is never acceptable in professional journalism."
The Minister praised the Pabna Press Club for its long-standing traditions and brotherly atmosphere, suggesting it serves as a model for the country. He noted that the current government is committed to media unity and intends to support the establishment of press clubs in every district. He further remarked that the administration values constructive criticism from the media.
The meeting was presided over by Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhter. Special guests included Pabna-5 MP Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, District BNP Convener Habibur Rahman Habib, and several veteran journalists.
Earlier that evening, the Minister inaugurated an eight-day book fair at Independence Square. During the inauguration, he informed reporters that discussions are underway with stakeholders to ensure responsible media freedom and that the government is documenting past instances of harassment against media workers.
