Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has urged city residents to stop dumping waste into canals and drains, warning that development projects alone cannot solve the city’s waterlogging crisis without public cooperation.
The Mayor made these remarks on Sunday while visiting the canals near the Rasulbagh residential area. He observed that indiscriminate garbage disposal is obstructing water flow, leading to increased flooding and significant health risks for residents.
The Mayor has deployed executive magistrates to monitor and penalize illegal garbage dumping on city roads. Plans are underway to renovate illegal dumping sites and reopen blocked roads to traffic. The CCC has intensified cleaning operations for all primary and secondary drains across the 41 wards.
"Canals are the city’s lifeline for drainage," Dr. Shahadat said. "When they are clogged with trash, even light rain leads to waterlogging. We are committed to a cleaner city, but citizen awareness is our greatest strength."
The Mayor also highlighted the suffering caused by stray dogs attracted to roadside garbage piles and emphasized that throwing trash only in designated bins is a collective responsibility for a livable Chattogram.
