Thousands of spectators gathered along the banks of the Barashia River in Boalmari, Faridpur on Tuesday afternoon to watch traditional bhela (raft) and chari (wooden tub) races.
Held near the bridge connecting Adharkotha and Gunbaha villages, the vibrant event sought to revive Bengal’s fading rural traditions. Alongside the water races, festivities included duck-catching contests, banana tree climbing and musical chairs for women. The riverbank transformed into a lively village fair, complete with food stalls and toy vendors.
Attending as the chief guest, Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Mazharul Islam emphasized the importance of hosting such events regularly to introduce younger generations to folk heritage. "Organizing these sports preserves our culture while offering healthy recreation for young people" he said, advocating for open playgrounds across every union.
Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) S.M. Rakibul Hasan presided over the program alongside local officials. Cultural experts noted that while modern entertainment has overshadowed traditional sports, the massive turnout proves community enthusiasm for folk culture remains strong when given proper platforms.
