Argentina’s national football team players have publicly called on head coach Lionel Scaloni to remain in his position as his contract nears its expiration in December.
Lionel Scaloni hinted at stepping down after Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final is currently negotiating an extension with the Argentine Football Association (AFA). Key squad members like Nicolas Paz, Cristian Romero, Leonardo Balerdi and Juan Musso arrived in Buenos Aires for training camp and expressed unanimous support for the manager.
"He gave me my debut and I hope he stays" said midfielder Nicolas Paz. Defender Cristian Romero added that Scaloni remains "the key figure in building this national team."
Taking over eight years ago the 48-year-old manager led Argentina through one of its most successful eras with winning the 2022 World Cup and back-to-back Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. Over 104 matches Scaloni recorded 76 wins, 18 draws and 10 losses alongside a national-record 36-game unbeaten streak. Scaloni is set to address the media next Tuesday before a friendly against Bolivia in Cordoba.
The upcoming international window carries added emotional weight for fans. Argentina will play friendlies against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
The final match at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires will serve as the official international farewell for captain Lionel Messi following his decision to retire from the national side.
