The lockdown called by the banned Awami League in Chattogram saw little response. In contrast, the BNP, Jamaat, and their allied groups were notably active throughout the city. From the morning, processions, sit-ins, and bike rallies organized by BNP and Jamaat leaders and supporters were observed at key intersections and city entrances. Law enforcement was on high alert, with police and army patrols visible across the area. Traffic was somewhat lighter than usual.
No significant incidents were reported in Chattogram city and nearby upazilas from morning until evening on Thursday (November 13).
Additionally, two platoons of BGB were stationed in Chattogram city since Wednesday night. Vehicle owners and drivers expressed concerns over potential sneak attacks. While offices and courts remained open, the turnout of service seekers was noticeably lower.
Reports indicate that Islamic Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists conducted a motorcycle rally in various parts of Chattogram city in the morning. BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists gathered, chanting slogans and using microphones at the Shah Amanat Bridge area of Baklia police station, as well as at Chandgaon, Bahaddarhat, and Muradpur intersections. Their rallies also took place in the commercial district of Agrabad and at the Oxygen intersection of Bayezid Bostami police station.
Siraji Manik, Publicity Secretary of the Chhatra Shibir's Metropolitan North branch, stated that a bike rally is being held across the city to thwart any potential sabotage by the banned Awami League. This effort is led by Metropolitan North President Tanjir Hossain Jewel and South Acting President Maimunul Islam Mamun.
He mentioned that their sit-in program has been ongoing throughout the day to ensure public safety. Metropolitan BNP joint convener and office-in-charge leader Shawkat Azam Khawaja stated that our party has not organized any counter-program.
However, concerning the Chhatra Dal's initiative, he mentioned that it could be their own decision.
It is important to highlight that on Thursday, the prohibited Awami League declared a nationwide lockdown initiative. On that same day, the International Crimes Tribunal set the date for the verdict regarding the crimes against humanity that occurred during the July uprising. The verdict in this case is scheduled to be announced on November 17 (Monday).
