Ride-sharing giants Uber and Lyft have announced strategic partnerships with Chinese tech firm Baidu to trial autonomous "robotaxis" in the UK starting in 2026.
The companies are currently seeking regulatory approval to deploy Baidu’s Apollo Go driverless vehicles on London streets, a move backed by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander as a "vote of confidence" in the UK's self-driving framework.
While Baidu has already completed millions of successful rides in China, the UK expansion faces significant hurdles. Experts warn that scaling autonomous systems in complex urban environments like London is a major challenge, while public sentiment remains wary.
A recent poll revealed that nearly 60% of UK residents would feel uncomfortable in a driverless cab. Concerns regarding safety, privacy, and increased traffic congestion continue to fuel the debate as regulators prepare to review the pilot schemes.
