Trinity Rodman has signed a contract extension with Washington Spirit that will make her the highest-paid women’s football player in the world, underscoring the growing financial strength of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The 23-year-old forward has renewed her deal with the Spirit through 2028. The contract is worth more than $1 million per season, according to her agent, Mike Senkowski of Upper 90 Sports Group, who confirmed the details to ESPN.
“I have made the Washington metropolitan area my home and the Spirit my family,” Rodman said in a statement released by the club. “I knew this was where I wanted to start the next chapter of my career.”
Rodman is one of the leading figures in American women’s football and a key player for both Washington Spirit and the U.S. women’s national team. Her renewal ends months of uncertainty over whether the NWSL could retain its top stars amid interest from European clubs, particularly in England.
The deal was made possible by a new NWSL rule that allows teams to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million to retain or attract players deemed “high impact.” With the league-wide salary cap set at $3.5 million for the 2026 season, the Spirit had previously appeared unlikely to match overseas offers.
“This agreement reflects our belief that elite talent deserves an elite commitment,” said Michele Kang, owner of Washington Spirit. “Trinity is a generational player and represents the future of this club and women’s football.”
Beyond her on-field success, Rodman has also drawn public attention for speaking openly about her strained relationship with her father, former NBA star Dennis Rodman. In a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she described her childhood as unstable and said her mother, Michelle Moyer, worked to shield her and her brother from her father’s lifestyle. Moyer divorced Dennis Rodman in 2012, the same year he stopped providing financial support, according to Trinity.
Dennis Rodman later issued a public apology, saying he would continue trying to repair their relationship.
For Washington Spirit, Rodman’s renewal is both a sporting and symbolic victory. “We’re going for titles and raising the bar,” Rodman said. “I’m excited about the direction this club is heading and proud of what we’ve built.”
