The flood situation in Chattogram has become "extremely severe," according to State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M. Iqbal Hossain, as continuous heavy rainfall continues to inundate large parts of the district.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Chattogram Circuit House on Saturday (July 11).
Iqbal Hossain said the government has been closely monitoring the adverse weather conditions over the past several days and will continue field visits to assess the extent of the damage.
"We have been monitoring the severe weather for the last four to five days. Over the next two days, we will visit five affected districts to assess the damage and determine whether additional assistance is needed," he said. 'The Situation Is Extremely Severe'
The state minister emphasized that the government is responding according to the needs identified by local authorities.
"We are providing whatever the local administration requests. We are fully prepared to supply whatever is necessary. The situation here is extremely severe. We understand the extent of the crisis, which is why we have been able to take timely measures. I came here to assess the situation firsthand," he said.
Iqbal Hossain said his visit also aimed to review how relief assistance is being distributed and to ensure that additional support can be provided immediately if required.
He added that local authorities are currently preparing lists of flood-affected residents while assessing the overall damage.
According to the minister, the government has adequate relief supplies in stock, and assistance will continue to be delivered based on requests from district administrations.
He also noted that rehabilitation plans are being developed to support families affected by the floods once the immediate emergency subsides.
