President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called for stepped-up research and innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, biotechnology and semiconductors to serve the public interest.
He made the emphasis when a delegation from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban, according to President’s Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam.
Highlighting the risks of unregulated technology, the President cautioned against the uncontrolled and indiscriminate use of AI, noting that overdependence reduces human creativity and critical thinking capacity. He urged moderation to ensure tech applications benefit society.
During the meeting VC Dr. Masud updated the President on KUET's ongoing academic affairs. The President advocated for decentralizing higher education beyond Dhaka and urged universities to play a central role in national research and development (R&D).
Dr. Masud invited the President in his capacity as Chancellor, to attend KUET’s upcoming convocation. The President accepted the invitation and confirmed his participation the Press Secretary said.
Senior officials from Bangabhaban and KUET faculty members were also present during the meeting.
