Police have arrested 10 people in connection with a violent attempt to seize a residential building during an ongoing land dispute in Dhaka’s Adabor area.
The investigation took a violent turn around 2:00 AM on Tuesday near the Nabodoy Housing kitchen market canal bank. Acting on a tip-off the law enforcers moved in to arrest suspects linked to Saturday's attack on a house in Shekhertek. According to Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam Jahangir, a group of seven to eight suspects confronted the police with machetes during the raid.
A police officer fired two rounds in self-defense with injuring two suspects in the legs. Police arrested four individuals at the scene are Rajib Howlader (30), Sagar alias Chhoto Bigar (24), Shakib (23) and Rashed (24). The injured suspects Rajib and Sagar were admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital under police custody. Officers also recovered steel machetes with sharp blades and weapons left behind by suspects who fled.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that six other suspects had been arrested on Monday also bringing the total number of detainees to 10.
The arrests stem from an incident on Saturday morning when an armed gang of 20 to 25 men attacked a house on Road No. 6 in the Shyamoli Housing project. Social media CCTV footage shows a masked man making a call before armed youths vandalized security cameras, windows and the main gate.
Family members of the building owner stated that a local influential person illegally occupied the property after August 5, 2024. Although the owners regained lawful possession on March 12 through court and police intervention the property faced another violent assault just months later.
The victims alleged that their emergency calls to 999 went unanswered during the attack also prompting them to file a formal written complaint with Adabor Police Station. Police raids continue to track down the remaining suspects.
