Russian air strikes injured eight people and triggered a fire in a nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv early Friday as the Ukrainian authorities reported as Moscow resumed air assaults following a brief pause during a visit by US peace envoys.
Footage from the scene showed emergency personnel battling flames at the heavily damaged apartment block in the Ukrainian capital where blast waves shattered dozens of windows. The strikes marked a rapid return to near-daily Russian bombardments after talks involving envoys from US President Donald Trump have been attempting to broker an end to the war.
Meanwhile Ukrainian drone strikes hit targets deep inside Russia. In the Volga River city of Saratov as the regional governor Roman Busargin said drone strikes damaged civilian infrastructure though no casualties were reported.
Russian e-commerce giant Ozon confirmed that a drone attack caused a fire at its Saratov logistics hub. The strike adds to more than two dozen warehouses operated by Ozon and rival Wildberries that have been struck in recent months. Saratov is a strategic industrial centre housing a major Rosneft oil refinery.
Further south in Volgograd also falling debris from a missile strike injured two people, damaged a residential building and hit an unspecified industrial site. The city hosts one of Russia’s largest oil refineries operated by Lukoil.
Both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians.
