Large anti-government protests were held across Israel on Saturday, with thousands demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling for an independent investigation into the events of October 7, 2023.
According to The Times of Israel, the main protest took place at Habima Square in Tel Aviv, where large crowds gathered under heavy police presence. Demonstrators criticised the government’s handling of detainees in Gaza and called for judicial independence as the Supreme Court continues proceedings related to the October 7 security failure.
Protests also took place in Jerusalem and Haifa, where around 1,000 people gathered at the Horev Center. Smaller demonstrations were reported in other parts of the country.
The protests were organised by the Movement for Quality Government along with other civil society organisations.
Netanyahu has so far refused to establish a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 incident, saying such a move would be biased.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Separately, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
