The United Nations has emphasized the need for a peaceful, secure, and participatory environment for the upcoming 13th National Parliament election in Bangladesh.
At a regular UN briefing in New York, Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq clarified the organization’s stance on the country's democratic process. His remarks came in response to questions regarding the upcoming polls scheduled for February 12, following the formation of the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Farhan Haq highlighted several critical factors for a successful electoral process. Ensuring all citizens can participate in public life without fear. Guaranteeing a space where diverse views can be shared freely. A commitment to seeing the election process move forward and conclude without disruption.
"It is crucial that an environment is ensured for the elections where all people can participate safely and peacefully and freely express their diverse views," Haq stated.
The UN’s position reflects ongoing international interest in Bangladesh’s transition back to democratic rule after the events of July 2024. While the UN will not send a formal observer mission, it continues to support the process through technical assistance and advocacy for fundamental human rights.
