Bangladesh return to ODI cricket after a four-month break as they face Pakistan in the first match of a three-game series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (March 11).
The series carries added importance for Bangladesh as they aim to secure direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz acknowledged the challenge of limited ODI opportunities since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
“We have not played many ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, which has been challenging. But we now have several matches ahead, which will help us plan better. Every match is important for maintaining our ranking and securing direct qualification for the World Cup,” Miraz said at a press conference.
He also spoke about the changing structure of the team following the absence of several senior players.
“Earlier, experienced players handled many responsibilities. Now the current squad must take that role. Our batters especially need to adapt to different match situations,” he added.
Pakistan arrive with a significantly reshaped squad. Six new players have been included, and at least three could make their ODI debuts in the opening match.
Despite the inexperience in Pakistan’s lineup, Miraz said Bangladesh would not underestimate the visitors and hopes the team can make the most of home conditions.
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi also expressed confidence in his side.
“Bangladesh are always strong at home and have been in good form recently. But we want to continue the consistency we showed against South Africa and Sri Lanka,” Afridi said.
Historically, Pakistan have dominated the ODI rivalry, winning 34 of the 39 matches played between the two teams. Bangladesh have five victories.
However, Bangladesh’s record improves significantly at home. Four of their five wins against Pakistan have come in Bangladesh, including a memorable 3-0 whitewash in 2015.
